Ski resorts
When people think of ski resorts in South Tyrol often have Ortisei (German: Sankt Ulrich in Gröden, Ladin: Gherdeina) or San Candido (German: Innichen) in mind. They both are the most elegant and famous ski resorts in the Alps, with no doubts! Beyond these famous ski resorts in the Dolomites, you can count on many more: Merano, the "wellness city" in South Tyrol "par excellence", offering the "Merano 2000" small ski zone, allowing you to ski with a wonderful sight on the city. Alta Val Venosta (German: Vinschgau, Ladin Val Venuesta) offers many ski resorts in South Tyrol: San Valentino alla Muta (German: Sankt Valentin an der Heide), Belpiano (German: Schöneben), Maseben. Other South Tyrolean ski resorts are: Vipiteno and Bressanone, whose ski and chair-lifts are very close to the city center!
Ortisei
Ortisei (German: Sankt Ulrich in Gröden, Ladin Urtijei) is the most mundane and important among the Val Gardena ski resorts, also called "The Dolomites queen". Ortisei is a very popular ski resort in winter and in summer, thanks to its wonderful mountain landscapes and attention to the tourist, as one of the most important pillars of Ladin culture is hospitality. Ortisei offers many accommodations in the Dolomites for every taste and every purse, from the family -run guesthouse till the elegant 5 stars winter hotels; you´ll find courtesy and cleanliness everywhere. Ortisei is often visited around Christmas thanks to its famous wooden cribs, exposed on the central street. Every crib is hand-carved by a Gardenese master; other works of art are the ice sculptures carved in a 3x3 meters ice blocs; they stand until the spring sun will melt them.
